Phyllis Charles Biography
Phyllis lived for 25 years in upstate New York as a fiber artist and designer working in batik, soft sculpture and art quilting.
After moving to St. Croix USVI in 1989 she was Director at the Botanical Garden for ten years where she developed an abiding interest and love of tropical plants, later reflected in her paintings.
She showed her work at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts and had two solo shows at St. Croix galleries. She was a founding member of the Artists Guild of St. Croix and helped develop and implement the Guild”s signature event The Art Show.
In 2019 she moved to Cape Cod. For several years animals have been the focus of her ongoing mixed media series “Like Species.” Her animals are assertive and charismatic, closely related to their surroundings. She hopes that the viewer will engage with her creatures, and will find her paintings provoking and sometimes amusing.
She is a member of the Guild of Harwich Artists, the Cape Cod Art Center, the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Cultural Center of Cape Cod, and the Chatham Creative Arts Center. She exhibits at juried exhibitions at these institutions.
